Painkillers Back Pain? Are they safe? One of the most frequent complaints is back pain. In a positive note, it is usually acute, which resolves within a few days or weeks. However, sometimes, it can also be one of the hardest and most frustrating for both patients and doctors to treat.

Intravertebral Disk Involvement can produce, not only back pain, but also arm and leg pain. It is usually lumbar in nature, most often occurs at L4 or L5 to S1 interspaces. The spinal column is the foundation of the skeleton. Therefore, it is subject to great
mechanical forces, like jumping, lifting, carrying heavy objects, and twisting. Linking each vertebra there is a cushion-like disk known as the intravertebral disk. These disks allow bending and twisting activities of the vertebral column by way of their flexibility. Under frequent pressure, the intravertebral disks may depreciate and permit a part of the disk substance to push its way against
the root of an emerging spinal nerve, causing nerve injury and obstructing its function. Hence, this condition is frequently known as “slipped disk” or a “herniated disk.” It is most common in the lower back. Usually, the sciatic nerve, which passes down the back of the thigh, is involved; thus, pain in the thighs, legs and feet may be felt. The pain may be worsened by sneezing, coughing, going to the toilet, movement, and weight bearing. Generally, symptoms fade away in response to management.

What are the things that should be done to relieve back pain? A patient with a “herniated disk” should be placed in a firm bed in position of greatest comfort. Pressure and weight bearing should be avoided. Local heat along with massage to the aching areas soothe the pain. With the physician’s order, mild painkillers and muscle relaxants may be given. Painkillers cause analgesia.
Anti-Inflamatory Painkillers Back Pain
Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) are mild painkillers. These include Fenoprofen, Flurbiprofen, Ibuprofen, Ketoprofen, Naproxen, and Oxaprozin. Acetaminophen, one of the Non opioid painkillers may also be taken. Painkillers must be taken with precaution. NSAIDs may cause arrhythmias, blood dyscrasias, cardiovascular thrombotic events, dizziness, gastric irritation, hepatotoxicity, hypotension, pruritus, decreased renal function, sodium and water retention, and tinnitus. Pelvic traction, done by the use of a pelvic belt to which weights are attached through the use of pulleys and cables, may also allay the pressure on the compressed nerve.
Sometimes, surgical removal of the broken portion of the disk and, possibly, fusion of the vertebrae may be indispensable. Post-operatively, painkillers such as Opioids are prescribed to relieve pain. Sedatives are also prescribed to relieve anxiety. Painkillers back pain tablets should only be used for severe back pain, and always try natural painkillers for back pain when you can.
