Causes Of Hearing Loss

Hearing loss is something that we should all be aware of. It is something can come with age, due to genetics or following exposure to a loud noise such as an explosion. The signs of hearing loss can be very subtle and can gradually accelerate over time. However here are a few things that the British Hearing Institute have noted to be common signs of hearing loss. These are things that you can look out for in your own behaviour, or in the behaviour of a loved one.

Social Situations

Social situations can be very difficult for those who are struggling with their hearing. Finding conversations with more than 2 people hard to follow can be a common sign of hearing loss. As can ringing in your ears or difficulty hearing woman and children. Having to have the TV turned up louder or finding yourself lip reading in order to understand what people are saying are key signs. These and more can all be indications of hearing loss.

Emotional Effects

Losing your hearing can be a very emotional experience, however sometimes these heightened emotions can be a sign that something is wrong. The BHI note the emotional effects that can be felt when suffering with hearing loss. These kinds of emotions include feeling frustrated due to constantly straining to understand what people are saying. Feeling annoyed at other people because you can’t understand them or feeling reluctant to meet new people.

Medically

Recognising the signs of hearing loss are especially important if you have a family history of hearing loss. Taking certain types of medicine can harm the hearing system, along with diabetes, heart, circulation and thyroid problems. Furthermore, if you’ve had frequent contact with loud noises or have been near an explosion, you should particularly be aware of the signs.

Whilst we should be aware of the signs of hearing loss, it is not something we should fear. There are a wide variety of small and stylish hearing aids on the market that can improve your hearing. The most desirable of which is the CIC – Completely in Canal. This Hearing Aid sits completely in the ear canal making it virtually invisible to others. There are also BTE – Behind the Ear – hearings aids as well as OTE – One the Ear devices and RIC – Receiver in Canal aids. Any team of hearing loss specialists will be able to provide you with all the help and advice you need should you find yourself suffering with hearing loss.
